Choose the right ceramic plates
Handmade ceramic plates differ from mass-produced tableware in that slight variations in shape, glaze, and color nuances are a natural part of their handcrafted character. This makes each plate unique, while also allowing you to combine different sizes and colors to create a personalized and harmonious set. Whether you are looking for plates for everyday use or wish to create a special table setting, you can curate your tableware to suit your own personal style.
What is the difference between porcelain and stoneware?
Porcelain and stoneware are both ceramic materials, yet they differ in terms of their composition, structure, and visual appearance. Both materials are used to create plates, bowls, cups, and other tableware. At Lars Rank Keramik, I work with both porcelain and stoneware, firing them at 1270 degrees. Both are mineral-based materials derived from kaolinite (weathered granite). The distinction lies in the fact that porcelain is crafted to emphasize a white color—and, in some varieties, translucency—giving the material a light, elegant quality that complements both classic and modern table settings. Stoneware typically features a coarser clay structure, which is often easier to manage during the crafting process. It frequently appears in shades of gray and brown, lending a natural, distinctive character to the pieces. Both materials are well-suited for handmade plates and tableware, where the form, glaze, and color all contribute to the final design.
Porcelain or stoneware for plates and tableware?
The choice between porcelain and stoneware depends primarily on the aesthetic you wish to achieve for your table setting. Porcelain is an excellent choice if you prefer a light, refined, and elegant look, whereas stoneware often offers a more rustic feel, featuring visible textures and natural color variations.
At Lars Rank Keramik, you will find handmade ceramic plates, bowls, mugs, cups, and other tableware that can be mixed and matched across different colors and designs. This allows you to create a personalized table setting suitable for both everyday use and special occasions.
Colors, glaze, and natural variations
Handmade ceramic plates feature natural variations, as the clay, glaze, and firing process all influence the final result. This means that the color and glaze may differ slightly from one plate to another, giving each individual piece its own unique character. At Lars Rank Keramik, I handcraft all my plates in my own workshop in Copenhagen. This applies to dinner plates, lunch plates, and side plates alike; I personally handle the shaping and glazing of every single piece. My plates are available in a variety of colors, allowing you to mix and match—for instance, combining dinner and lunch plates—to create a table setting with a look that is entirely your own.
Care of ceramic plates
Ceramics are made to be used, but handmade tableware lasts longest when treated with care. Avoid hard knocks against the edges, and stack plates carefully to keep the glaze looking good for as long as possible. All plates in my webshop are dishwasher safe, so you don’t have to wash them by hand. They are also microwave safe, allowing you to easily heat up food directly on the plate.
